Mauldin voters replaced a City Council incumbent with a challenger who has lived in the city almost his entire life and handed new four-year terms to two other council members.
Taft Matney, a public relations and governmental affairs consultant, beat incumbent Patricia Gettys 781-663 for Seat 1.
Councilman Gabe Hunter turned back a challenge from former councilman Randy Kuzniar by a vote of 737-663 for Seat 3, while Councilman Dale Black beat former councilman James Kennedy 794-647 for Seat 5.
Nine percent of voters turned out, said Conway Belangia, Greenville County director of voter registration and elections.
Matney said he was excited.
“We had an amazing campaign,” he said. “We had an amazing ground game. We had an amazing group of volunteers that wore out shoe leather, knocked on doors and got out a message about Mauldin’s future.”
He said he will focus on quality of life and economic development issues. His council term begins on Jan. 1, and he will be sworn in at a meeting that month.
Gettys declined comment.
