For several years, Mauldin City Council has requested improvements to East Butler Road in an effort to ease traffic congestion and support pedestrian/bicycle pathways that will help foster the development of city center and feed toward Bridgeway Station, as the Swamp Rabbit Trail system continues its southern extension.
The public provided input, and due to a number of factors, the South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) postponed the project.
It has new life, but there are a number of concerns that several members of city council have, and those concerns have led to discussions with members and staff of our state and federal legislative delegations.
SCDOT has launched a new website dedicated to the East Butler Road project.
Visit buildingabetterbutler.com to learn more.
It is VITAL that Mauldin residents and businesses provide input in this project.
A virtual public information meeting will be available online from January 5, 2021 through February 5, 2021, and an in-person meeting will be available at the Mauldin Cultural Center on January 14, 2021.
ONLINE: All project information, including meeting displays, handouts, and comment forms, will be available on buildingabetterbutler.com beginning January 5, 2021.
IN-PERSON: Thursday, January 14, 2021, 11 a.m. – 7 p.m., Mauldin Cultural Center, 101 E. Butler Road. The website states that “Appointments are strongly encouraged due to health and safety protocols. Walk-ins will be accommodated based on availability.”
In-person meetings can be scheduled through buildingabetterbutler.com or by contacting SCDOT Project Manager Casey Lucas at 803-737-1807 or ButlerRoad@scdot.org.
The project is necessary in concept, but how it is executed is crucial. Become involved, and make your voice heard so we truly can build a better Butler.

Mr. Matley,
I live on Fargo St. and my property and my neighbors’ properties will be greatly affected by the proposed changes to Bethel Dr. We are forming an organization to fight the proposed route through the rear of the Frances L Taylor property on the corner of Bethel Drive and E. Butler Rd. (Alternate 2). We want to minimize disruption to all parties involved in any Alternate rougte. . Our opinion is that there could be a fourth Alternative that could save money and eliminate the possibility the demolition of three homes on Fargo St. and the isolation of 57 Cameron Place town homes during any flooding of Bethel Drive. Obviously we are seeking allies.

Thank you, Mr. Adams.
As I wrote, it is VITAL that affected residents participate in the process and be heard.
Members of city council, including Mayor Merritt and me, have presented the issue to members of Greenville County Council and our state and federal legislative delegations. We are continuing to have those conversations because we believe there’s a better way to build a better Butler than what has been offered.
Please participate in the in-person session on January 14, and encourage your neighbors to do the same.
Sincerely,
Taft Matney
