I’ve had a number of people ask, “When are your signs going up? The election is getting close, and I haven’t seen your signs ANYWHERE.”
Well, there’s been a little hiccup, and that’s why I haven’t put out any signs.
Even though the municipal election commission hasn’t met yet, because of Section 7-13-190(E) in the South Carolina Code of Laws, by law, since I’m unopposed and the time has now passed for someone to submit a letter of intent to pursue a write-in campaign, I’m automatically declared the winner.
While three city council seats are up this year, only one seat is contested, and that’s the only one that will appear on the ballot on November 7.
I was instructed not to put up signs or send any mail since my seat won’t be on the ballot. Putting up signs would create confusion when voters go the polls looking for my name and I’m not on the ballot.
As a side note, this section of state law was repealed by the General Assembly this year, so 2017 will be the last year that uncontested municipal races are automatically certified. That means if I run again in four years, I’ll absolutely be asking to put signs in your yard and your business.
Until then, I want to thank everyone who supported me so far and everyone who continues supporting the work we’re doing to keep Mauldin moving forward. Thank you for entrusting me with another four-year term. You don’t know how humbling your trust is.
As always, never hesitate to reach out if there’s anything I can do.
