This morning, public relations and governmental affairs consultant Taft Matney filed paperwork to enter the race for Seat 1 on Mauldin City Council.
Speaking to family and friends, the married father of one said, “Mauldin is home. My heart is here. It’s where I grew up. It’s where I graduated high school, and it’s where I wanted to anchor my family as an adult,” adding, “I see Mauldin’s potential. As a city of roughly 23,000, we aren’t realizing it.”
Matney said he believes there are a lot of things Mauldin does well but that there are a number of areas in which the city can improve.
“I want to be a voice on Mauldin City Council that looks to the future,” he said. “Our city’s history is important to who we are, but as other area cities and towns plan for a new type of economy and greater expectations from residents, we can’t lock ourselves to the past. We can’t be content doing things certain ways just because those are the ways they’ve always been done.”
Asked about specific themes he plans to focus on during the campaign, Matney said he will address several areas ranging from quality of life, city services, and economic issues and that he will discuss them as he takes his messages directly to city voters.
“Mauldin doesn’t exist in a bubble. We have to compete for new business and new residents, and to do that, we need to foster an environment and create a look and feel that makes people want to stop in Mauldin, do business in Mauldin, and live in Mauldin,” he said. “This isn’t about Mauldin’s past. This is about Mauldin’s future.”
He added that while the campaign’s website www.MatneyForMauldin.com is still a work in progress until after the August 15 filing deadline, he can be contacted directly through it or by emailing him at taft@matneyformauldin.com.
The election will be November 5. Polls open at 7:00 a.m. and close at 7:00 p.m.
